Hornets Falls to UMES 56-48 After Close Finish

PRINCESS ANNE, MD --The Delaware State women's basketball team went into the fourth quarter tied 35-35 with Maryland-Eastern Shore, but could not take control and fell 56-48 to the Hawks on the road Thursday.

Ericka Huggins led the Hornets (7-22, 4-10) with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals. Jermesha Frierson tacked on eight points, five assists and five steals and Nevaeh Reaves helped out with nine points.

Delaware State pulled down 32 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Maryland-Eastern Shore's 28, led by Huggins' seven boards. The Hornets also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into two second chance points.

Delaware State forced 23 Maryland-Eastern Shore turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Frierson's five steals led the way for Delaware State.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Maryland-Eastern Shore kept adding to that lead, building a 21-6 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run to narrow its deficit to 21-12, a score that would hold until halftime.

After intermission, Delaware State cut its deficit to 23-18 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Liliana Harrison, to grab a 25-23 lead with 5:28 to go in the third. The Hawks then rallied to tie it at 35-35 heading into the fourth quarter. Delaware State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 23 total points.

Maryland-Eastern Shore broke the tie, taking control in the final quarter winning 56-48. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 13 points.
