Dover, Del. (Sep. 16, 2021) --- The red-hot Delaware State volleyball team takes on Binghamton in a home-and-home weekend series. The Hornets and Bearcats will meet on Friday (Sep. 18) in Binghamton. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m. The teams will match up again at Delaware State on Sunday starting at 3:00 p.m.
The Hornets have won their last six matches to stand at 10-1 this season, tops among Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams, and the best start after 11 matches since the program began in 1985.
DSU has won the last six matches by 3-0 scores, and has failed to lose a set in nine of its 10 victories. The Hornets have won 31 of 36 sets this season.
The six consecutive wins also marks the team's longest streak since winning nine straight in the 1986 MEAC championship season.
The Hornets are also dominating the team statistical categories in the MEAC so far this season. Delaware State is tops in the league in hitting percentage (.256), opponent hitting percentage (.102), assists (13.3 per set), kills (14.1 per set), blocks (2.4 per set) and service aces (2.2 per set).
Individually, Delaware State's
Adriana Rodriguez is the MEAC's leader with a .434 hitting percentage (69 kills/ 16 errors/122 attacks), while teammate
Alondra Maldonado is third at .356 (115/27/247).
Maldonado, a two-time MEAC Player of the Week, is also third in the league in kills at 3.38 per set.
Delaware State's
Sydney Lewis, a preseason All-MEAC selection, in No. 1 in the conference in blocks at 1.41 per set, while
Kristi Gomez in the MEAC leader in service aces at 0.58 per set. Gomez has 21 total aces this season, also a league high.
Binghamton has won its last two matches to improve to 4-6 this season.
The Hornets and Bearcats have three common opponents this season. Each team has played St. Peter's, St. Francis Brooklyn and Siena. The Hornets are 2-0 (3-0; 3-0) vs. St. Peter's, and 1-0 against St. Francis Brooklyn (3-0) and Siena (3-0).
Binghamton is 1-0 against St. Peter's (3-0) and Siena (3-2), but fell to St. Francis Brooklyn (2-3).   Â
