Dover, Del. (Apr. 22, 2021) --- Delaware State's bid to compete in the MEAC Softball Championship Tournament will likely be determined by the result of its home series against Norfolk State this weekend.
The Hornets and Spartans will play two seven-innings games on Friday and Saturday, starting at 1:00 p.m. each day.
Norfolk State is currently second in the MEAC Northern Division with a 9-6 division record (16-13 overall). Delaware State is third in the division at 8-7 (10-17 overall).
The top two teams in the MEAC Northern and Southern divisions will compete in the league championship tournament in Norfolk, Va., next month.
Morgan State leads the North with an 11-4 mark (14-12 overall).
Delaware State has been idle since winning two of three games at the MEAC Round-up in Orangeburg, S.C., last weekend.
The Hornets have a team are batting average of .251. Centerfielder
Jonah Cunnigan is tops among team regulars with a .318 average (27-for-89). Cunnigan also leads the team with three triples and three stolen bases.
Catcher/designated hitter
Jaelyn Baker is second on the Hornets with a .304 average. Baker is also second on the team with two home runs and 12 runs batted in.
First baseman Caitlyn Meyer is Delaware State's leader with four home runs and 19 RBI.
Norfolk State is second in the MEAC with a team batting average of .275 and tops among league pitching staffs with a 2.47 earned run average.
