DSU SWEEPS TWIN-BILL FROM COPPIN STATE FOR SERIES WIN

Dover, Del. (Mar. 21, 2021) --- Jaelyn Baker drove in the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning to lift Delaware State to 5-4 victory over Coppin State to give the Hornets a sweep of a MEAC North doubleheader today.
DSU won the opener 12-8 to take three of the four games in the weekend series.
In the nightcap, Jonah Cunnigan began the 11th inning at second base under softball tie-break rules. Cunnigan moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Caitlyn Meyer before scoring the winning run on Baler's fly out to center.
The Hornets trailed 4-0 in game two before scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cunnigan tripled in the first two runs of the inning and the third run crossed the plate on a ground out by Meyer.
Delaware State trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Jade King singled to lead off the DSU seventh and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The Hornets were down to their last out when Jasmine Melgoza singled up the middle to score King with the tying run and send the game into extra innings.
Yanique Spencer was the winning pitcher the Hornets in game two, going all 11 innings, allowing just seven hits and striking out three.
In the opener, Caitlyn Meyer was two-for-two with a home run and five RBI, and Baker drove in three to lead the Hornets' 12-hit attack.
Coppin State opened the scoring with five runs in the top of the third inning. Delaware State answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, with a three-run homer by Meyer the big blow in the inning.
The Hornets took the lead for good when Baker singled in three in the fourth to give DSU a 7-5 advantage.
Delaware State put four more on the board in the fifth to open up an 11-5 lead. Meyer had a two-run double and Melgoza singled in two to key the inning.
Meyer leads the Hornets with three home runs and 16 runs batted in this season.
Jade King was three for four with a RBI and Cunnigan scored three runs in the opener for the Hornets.
Delaware State improved to 8-6 overall and 6-2 in the MEAC North with the doubleheader sweep.
