DSU TAKES NIGHTCAP TO EARN SPLIT WITH EAGLES

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Dover, Del. (Mar. 20, 2021) – Delaware State scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a two-run lead and held on for a 6-5 victory over visiting Coppin State in the second game of a doubleheader today.
The Eagles took the opener 7-4, highlighted by a five-run seventh inning.
In the nightcap, Delaware State trailed 4-1 before scoring five consecutive runs to open up a 6-4 lead.
The Hornets began their comeback with a run in the bottom of the third. Jasmine Melgoza singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice by Caitlyn Meyer with one out to cut the Eagles' lead to 4-2.
DSU still trailed by two before scoring three runs in the fifth to regain the lead. Jonah Cunnigan tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on a ground out by Meyer to pull the Hornets to within 4-3. The Hornets tied the game at 4-4 on a single by Alaena Selden and went ahead 5-4 in a wild pitch with two outs in the fifth.  
Delaware State opened up a 6-4 lead in the sixth when Jaelyn Baker doubled with two outs and nobody on, and Selden followed with her second run-scoring single of the game.
Coppin State put a scare in the Hornets by scoring a run in the top of the seventh to pull to within 6-5.
The Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh when DSU reliever Sydney Hoffman retired the final out on a grounder to third.
Delaware State had 14 hits in game two. Baker and Hannah Crumblish had three hits each to lead the way.
The Hornets' game two win overshadowed a dominating performance by Coppin State third baseman and Milford, Del., native Nia Bowe, who was four-for-four with two home runs and all five CSU runs batted in. Bowe smacked her second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the third, to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
In the opener, the score was 2-2 before Coppin State scored five unearned runs in the seventh inning to take control.
Bowe and Haley Bravo had three hits each for the Eagles in the opener.
Meyer drove in two of Delaware State's four runs in game one.
The Hornets and Eagles will wrap up the series with two games on Sunday at DSU.
