Dover, Del. (Apr. 28, 2019) --- Catcher Jaelyn Baker was three- for-four with a home run and a career-high five RBI to lead Delaware State to a 15-1 MEAC North win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the Hornets' regular season finale on Sunday.
DSU swept the three-game series to finish the regular year with a 7-8 mark in the MEAC and 10-30 overall record. The Hornets outscored the Hawks 26-1 in the series.
Delaware State is expected to be the No. 4 North seed in the upcoming MEAC Tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Baker singled in a run in the DSU's three-run first inning. The Hornets put six runs on the board in the second inning to open up a 9-0 lead. The second inning explosion was highlighted by Baker's three run homer, his team-leading third of the season. She also leads the Hornets with 25 runs batted in.
Baker knocked in her fifth run of the game, doubling home Jonan Cunnigan in the third, to give the Hornets a 10-0 lead.
Second baseman Jasmine Melgoza was three-for-four with three RBI in the game. She doubled home two runs in the Hornets' five-run fourth inning.
First baseman Vanessa Barron had a two-run triple in the first to give DSU the early lead.
Brianna Baker pitched three shutout innings to earn the win. Baker, the winner in all three series games, did not allow a run in 15 innings pitched vs. the Hawks.
The contest also marked the final home appearance for the Hornets' lone senior, outfielder Sabrina Quarles, who was honored before the game.
