BAKER LEADS HORNETS TO SWEEP OF HAWKS
Dover, Del. (Apr. 27, 2019) --- Brianna Baker threw 12 shutout innings over two games to lead Delaware State to a sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore in a MEAC North doubleheader today. The Hornets took the opener 3-0 and completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory in game two.
Baker, the Hornets' starter in each game, allowed seven hits and struck out three in the twin-bill. She scattered just three hits in the complete game shutout win in the opener.
Tiffany Diao threw the last two innings of game two to combine with Baker for the shutout.
Third baseman Jade King was the hitting star for the Hornets in the doubleheader, tallying four hits and four RBI in six at bats in the two games. Jaelyn Baker was three-for-six with two RBI in the twin-bill.
In the opener, DSU opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jasmine Melgoza was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. She scored the game's first run on a triple to center by Jaelyn Baker, who crossed the plate with Hornets' second run when King followed with a triple to right.
The Hornets added an insurance in the sixth when King doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by Vanessa Barron.
Delaware State also scored two first inning runs on a triple by King in the nightcap.
The Hornets added four runs in the third to stretch their lead to 6-0. King singled in her third run of the game, while Barron and Taylor Leydig also had run scoring hits in the third.
DSU led 7-0 when Jaelyn Baker doubled in the Jasmine Melgoza in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game was then called due to the MEAC's eight-run rule.
The Hornets and Hawks will wrap up the series with the single game on Sunday at noon. It's also DSU's regular season finale. Hornet senior Sabrina Quarles will be honored prior to the game.
