Dover, Del. (Mar. 20, 2019) --- Jonah Cunnigan drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Delaware State 2-1 victory over Fairfield in game two of a doubleheader in the Hornets' 2019 home opener this afternoon. Fairfield won the opener 9-2.
In the nightcap, the score was tied at 1-1 when the Hornets came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Alexis Roberson singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Vanessa Barron. Roberson was still at second with two outs when Carissa Thorne and Jasmine Melgoza reached on infield singles to load the bases. The next batter, Jonah Cunnigan, walked on a 3-2 pitch to bring home Roberson with the winning run.
Fairfield opened the game two scoring with a run in the top of the first on a two-out single by Mikayla Rubin off DSU starter Alexis Goldsby.
The Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Jaelyn Baker doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a ground out by Roberson.
Goldsby (2-6) tossed a complete game to earn the win in the nightcap for the Hornets, allowing five hits and one run, without a strikeout or walk.
Roberson and Jasmine Melgoza had two hits each in game two for the Hornets.
In the opener, Rubin was four-for-four with a run scored and one batted in to lead the Staggs. Courtney Hankins had three hits and two RBI in four at bats, while Kaitlin Hoffman and Kaleigh MacDonald drove in two runs each for Fairfield in the opener.
Roberson and Jordan Casey had run-scoring hits for Delaware State in game one.
The Hornets (3-15) will begin their 2019 MEAC North schedule with a three-game series at home against Coppin State this weekend. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and concludes with a single game on Sunday at noon.
