Lynchburg, Va. (Feb. 21, 2019) ---Liberty scored 19 runs in the first two innings en route to a 20-0 victory over Delaware State on day one of the Liberty Challenge Softball Tournament today.
The Flames scored nine runs on six hits in the first inning and exploded for 10 more runs on six hits in the second inning. Liberty was also aided by two Delaware State errors in the second.
The game was called after DSU batted in the top of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
Madison Via was two-for-three with five runs batted in, while Jaclyn Amader had two hits and three RBI; and Amber Bishop was three-for-three and drove in two for the Flames.
Amander had a three-run triple and Via smacked a two-run homer off DSU starter Brianna Baker to highlight Liberty's nine-run first inning. Via tripled in two more in the Liberty third.
Delaware State managed just three hits in the contest, a single by Jasmine Melgoza to lead off the game and base hits by Taylor Leydig in the second inning and Jordan Casey in the fourth.
The Hornets will continue tournament play on Friday against Valparaiso. Game time is set for 8:00 a.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
DSU is scheduled to face Bucknell and Wright State on Saturday, and close out the tournament against Princeton on Sunday.
