Jacksonville, Ala. (Dec. 18, 2019) --- Delaware State's
John Crosby reached the 30-point mark for the third game in a row, but it was not enough as the visiting Hornets suffered their fourth straight defeat, falling to Jacksonville State (Ala.) 92-80 this evening.
Crosby, in his first season with the Hornets after three years at Dayton, scored a career-high 36 points on 13-for-24 shooting from the field, including 5-of-8 on three-point shots. He also topped all players with nine rebounds, in addition to recorded four assists and four steals, each a team high.
Crosby is the first DSU player with 30-or-more points in three straight games since Tom Davis set a school-record with four in a row during the 1988-89 season.
Crosby has scored 97 points during the streak, the best three-game stretch by a Hornet since Davis totaled 105 in the 88-89 campaign.
The MEAC's leading scorer at 22.3 points per game, Crosby was tied for 19
th among all NCAA Div. I players in scoring entering this evening's contest.
His 36 points vs. Jacksonville State also marked the most by a Hornet vs. a Div. I team since Amere May notched 40 points vs. Coppin State on Mar. 5, 2015.
Jacara Cross led five Jacksonville State double-figure scorers with 20 points on 9-for-10 shooting from the field. Ty Hudson added 19 points (7-8 FG; 2-2 3pt FG), while Derek St. Hilaire chipped in 18 (9-9 FT) for the Gamecocks.
Jacksonville State shot 59.3% from the field in the game, connecting on 32 of their 54 shots. The Gamecocks also knocked down 18 of their 22 free throws (81.8%).
Ameer Bennett was second on the Hornets in scoring with 15 points. Bennett has reached double-figures in scoring in three straight, and four of the last five games.
LJ Stansbury added 13 points for DSU, highlighted by 7-for-7 shooting at the free throw line.
Jacksonville State didn't trail in the game after opening up a 3-2 lead.
The Gamecocks led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but the Hornets outscored JSU 15-3 in the final 2:41 of the half to trim the deficit to 48-29 at the break.
Delaware State went on a 10-0 run early in the second half, keyed by five points from Stansbury, to pull to within 55-51.
Later in the half, Stansbury hit two free throws to cut the Gamecocks' lead to 58-57 with 13:09 left to play.
Jacksonville State answered with a 14-2 over the next five minutes, and built a 72-59 lead on two free throws by Ty Hudson with 8:21 remaining.
The Hornets could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
DSU fell to 1-11 this season, while Jacksonville State won its second in a row to improve to 4-7.
Delaware State remains on the road for its next contest, visiting St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday (Dec. 22). Game time is 2:00 p.m..
