Dover, Del. (Nov. 23) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets lost to Cornell University Big Red 77-51. On Saturday night at Memorial Hall. This marks the second loss in the row for the Lady Hornets, as their record drops to 3-3 on the season.
Sharajah Collins got things started for Delaware State, hitting a three on their first offensive possession for an early 3-2 lead.
After an 5-0 Cornell run, Lyric Turner hit back to back three's for DSU, to cut their deficit to just one at 10-9 with 4:16 left in the quarter.
Just before the first quarter buzzer sounded, Collins drained another three-pointer. Cornell led though at 14-12 after one.
Turner and Collins accounted for all DSU's points in the first quarter, as each made a pair of threes.
DSU forward Tierra Floyd opened the second quarter by nailing a three-pointer from the top of the arc, giving the Lady Hornets a brief 15-14 lead.
Lanayjha Ashe knocked down a triple stopping a Cornell run, and cutting their deficit to six points, with 2:57 left in the second quarter.
Big red scored the last six points of the half though, and DSU trailed 36-24 entering halftime.
Cornell used a 9-4 run early in the third quarter to increase their lead to 17.
After a Lady Hornet timeout, Miajah Bullock weaved past the Cornell defense for a layup. On the following possession Zoe Holmes secured an offensive rebound and kicked it out for an open three pointer on the left wing by Lyric Turner.
Turner finished with a team high 15 points, including three made three pointers. The Ju-co transfer also added two rebounds and two assists.
Miajah Bullock capped off DSU's 8-0 run. Bullock sliced through the middle of the Big Red defense to finish with a right-hand layup, despite being fouled. The Junior from Anniston, Alabama made the free throw to convert the 'And-1' opportunity. The Lady Hornets flurry shrunk the Cornell lead down to 45-36 with 4:24 left in the third quarter.
That was as close as Delaware State would get. Cornell closed out the quarter with a 10-4 run, retaking a commanding lead at 55-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
DSU was outscored 23 to 11 in the final ten minutes of play.
Cornell University was scorching hot from the field making 32-of-60 (53.3%) field goal attempts, they made 3-of-13 (23.1%) on three-pointers.
Delaware State shot just 18-of 62 (29.0%) from the field and 8-of-28 (28.6%) on three-point attempts.
DSU guard Lanayjha Ashe was the only other Lady Hornet in double digits, she finished the game with 14 points, including two three-pointers. Ashe also had a team high six rebounds and four assists.
