Norfolk, Va. (Oct. 24, 2019) --- Delaware State guard “Pinky” Wiley (jr.; Chesterfield, Va.) has been named to the 2019-20 Preseason All-MEAC Men's Basketball Third Team, in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.
As a sophomore during the 2018-19 season, Wiley was tops in the MEAC in steals (2.1 pg) and fourth in assists (4.4 pg). In addition, he was third on the Hornets and 27th in the MEAC in scoring (9.5 ppg), including a 10.8 point per-game average in MEAC games.
Wiley tallied a career-high 28 points, highlighted by six three-point field goals (6-for-14), vs. Norfolk State last season; and also reached double-figures in scoring in 12 other games.
Bethune-Cookman forward Cletrell Pope was selected as the 2019-20 Preseason MEAC Player-of-the-Year. He's joined on the First Team by BCU teammate Malik Maitland, Charles Williams of Howard, Damani Applewhite of South Carolina State and Dejuan Clayton of Coppin State.
Also, Delaware State has been picked to finish ninth in the 10-team 2019-20 MEAC men's basketball regular season race. The Hornets were 11th in the 2018-19 MEAC standings with a 2-14 league record. DSU upset No. 6 seed Savannah State in the 2019 MEAC Tournament before falling to eventual champ North Carolina Central in the tournament quarterfinals.
In a razor-tight vote, three-time defending champ North Carolina Central is the voters' choice to win the 2019-20 MEAC regular season race.
The Eagles captured seven of 20 first place votes and 192 total votes in the balloting. Bethune-Cookman had the most first place votes with eight and 189 total votes to rank second in the preseason poll.
Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T are tied for third in the poll, while South Carolina State is fifth.
The 2019-20 Delaware State men's basketball season tips-off Nov. 8 at home against Rider. Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
