HORNETS BEGIN HOMESTAND WITH FRI. MATCH VS. BCU

Dover, Del. (Oct. 24, 2019) --- The Delaware State volleyball team will play its next three matches at home, beginning with a visit by Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference  Southern Division rival Bethune-Cookman on Fri. (Oct. 25). The contest is set for 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

The Hornets have dropped their last three matches to fall to 8-15 overall and 3-5 in the MEAC North. DSU is currently tied with Maryland-Eastern Shore for fourth place in the North standings. The top four teams in the division qualify for the conference championship tournament. MDES currently holds the tie-breaker over the Hornets by virtue of its 3-1 victory over the Hornets on Oct. 15 in Princess Anne, Md.

Delaware State and Maryland-Eastern Shore are scheduled to meet again on Nov. 1 at DSU.

Morgan State is currently third in the North standings, one game ahead of Delaware State and MDES at 4-4. The Hornets defeated Morgan State 3-2 on Sep. 29 in Baltimore, Md.

Delaware State, under first-year head coach Bruce Atkinson, is seeking its first MEAC Tournament appearance since 2010.

Entering this weekend's action, the Hornets are fourth-or-better in the MEAC in four statistical categories.

DSU is second in the league in service aces at 1.84 per set, and fourth in hitting percentage (.184), kills (11.4 p/s) and assists (10.59 p/s).

Individually, Hornet libero Jasmal Cruz (fr.) is No. 1 in the MEAC in aces at 0.48 per set (40 total) and eighth in the league in digs (3.71 p/s).

Delaware State also features the numbers two-and-three hitters in the league in terms of percentage. Sydney Armbrister (gr.) is second in the MEAC with a .315 attack percentage. Armbrister has 122 kills and just 38 errors on 267 attacks this season. Sydney Lewis (fr.) ranks third in the conference with a .312 attack percentage, tallying 116 kills and 41 errors on 240 attempts.  Lewis posted a MEAC season-high .724 attack percentage, recording 22 kills and just one error in 29 attacks.

In addition, she ranks sixth in the conference in blocks at 0.87 per set.

Hornet setter Jelena Dukic (jr.) is second in the MEAC at 8.30 assists per set (614 total). Dukic has topped the 50-assist mark in three matches, including 53 vs. St. Peter's on Sep. 11, the third best single-match total in the league this season.

Delaware State's Anadys Valentin (fr.) is No. 8 in the MEAC in kills at 2.76 per set.  

Bethune-Cookman has also dropped its last three matches. The Wildcats are 6-17 overall and are currently third in the MEAC South with a 3-5 division record.
