DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team fell in five sets (28-30, 27-25, 25-20, 23-25, 14-16) to the Coppin State Lady Eagles Sunday at home at Memorial Hall.
The loss dropped Delaware State's record to 10-17 overall and 6-7 in MEAC action.
The Hornets were led by a double-double from Gerren Tomlin, who registered 18 kills and 12 digs on the day. Aaliyah Mitchell also added 13 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Ailena Mykins chipped in for with 12 digs to go with eight blocks from Kelsie Dawson.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets came up short in a back-and-forth first set, losing 30-28 in a game that featured six lead changes and was tied 22 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the match.
SET 2 | Delaware State responded to pick up a 27-25 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hornets survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Coppin State attacks in the stanza.
SET 3 | Delaware State grabbed another win in the third set to make it a 2-1 match. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-20 victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a 12 point lead at 19-7 before closing out the set. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking seven Coppin State attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 Coppin State attacking errors on the way to victory.
SET 4 | Delaware State couldn't keep the win streak alive, as the Lady Eagles forced a fifth set with a 25-23 fourth-set win. Coppin State grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 and Delaware State wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up eight times before the Lady Eagles took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 5 | Delaware State took a lead of two sets to one before falling in the final two sets, including a 16-14 loss in the fifth set. The Hornets dropped a back-and-forth set five, losing in a stanza that featured two lead changes and was tied seven times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set.
