WASHINGTON POWERS HORNETS TO SWEEP OF EAGLES

Baltimore, Md. (Apr. 1, 2017) --- Vanessa Washington combined for four hits, including three home runs, and seven runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a sweep of Coppin State in a MEAC doubleheader on Saturday. The Hornets won the first game 6-1 and completed the sweep with a 12-4 victory in the nightcap.

Washington was 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in the opener. The homer was her second of the season and gave the Hornets a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning. She also drove in DSU's final run of the game on a fielder's choice in the seventh.

Desiree Moreno also homered for the Hornets in game one. She led off the sixth with her third blast of the season to stretch DSU's lead to 3-1. Moreno also had a double in a 3-for-3 performance at the plate in the opener.

Sabrina Quarles, Jasmine Melgoza and Khaliyah Flournory had two hits each for the Hornets in the first game of the twin-bill.

Jess Shalongo (2-2) was the game one winner for DSU, allowing six hits and one run, while striking out four in the complete game effort.

In the nightcap, Washington was 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI, marking the third time she has hit two homers and her fourth time with five runs driven in at DSU.

The Hornets led 2-0 when Moreno tripled with the bases loaded to highlight DSU's five-run third inning.

Coppin State scored four times in the bottom of the third to cut the Hornets' lead to 7-4.

Washington smacked her first homer of the game and second of the day with two runners on in the fourth to give the Hornets a 10-4 lead.

She capped off the scoring with a two-run shot and third home run of the doubleheader in the sixth inning. Washington leads the Hornets with four home runs, while Moreno has a team-high 13 RBI this season.  

Dani Velez drove in two runs while Mika Lumsden was 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

The Hornets (8-17; 6-1 MEAC) and Eagles (3-24; 1-4) will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at the Coppin State Softball Complex in Baltimore.
