Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 21, 2016) --- Bethune-Cookman lived up to its No. 1 seed with a 4-0 victory over No. 4 Delaware State in the opening round of the 2016 MEAC Women's Tennis Championship at the Folkes-Stevens Center on the campus of Old Dominion University this morning.
The Wildcats won the three completed singles matches and captured the doubles point with victories in each of the finished contests to advance to the semifinals on Friday.
The loss snapped a seven-match win streak for the Hornets, who ended the spring season with a 10-4 overall record.
Delaware State's Sofia Rachi put up a good fight against Bethune-Cookman's Hilary Hanton in the second set of the No. 4 singles contest, falling 4-6 after a 1-6 loss in the opening set.
DSU's Milan Graves fell to Wildcat Matea Roki 0-6 and 1-6 in the No. 2 singles match, while Hornet freshman Liz Bessonova was upended by Alejandra Vidal 1-6, 0-6 at No. 6.
Delaware State's Shelby Moffat dropped the first set 4-6 to Bethune's Mina Matsuba, the 2016 MEAC Player-of-the-Year, in the No. 1 singles contest but the match was not completed.
Elvira Galieva (No. 3) and Aayshi Chouhaw (No. 5) had their matches suspended after falling in the opening set.
Bethune-Cookman took the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles contests by 6-0 scores.
