WBB: Hornets Can't Keep Pace With Hokies

Blacksburg VA – Delaware State fell to 19th ranked Virginia Tech, losing 88-48. The loss is the Hornets eighth in a row and they drop to 1-11 on the season. Virginia Tech remain undefeated improving to 13-0.

DSU's NaJai Pollard recorded her eighth double-double of the season. Pollard had a game high 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Ivana Negron was the only other Lady Hornet to reach double digits. Negron had a career high 10 points, including two made 3-point field goals.

Virginia Tech had six players in double figures. Chanette Hicks and Samantha Hill led the team with 14 points apiece. Vanessa Panousis had 12 points. Sidney Cook, Kaela Kinder, and Regan Magarity had 10 points each.  All ten Hokies that dressed for the game scored.

Delaware State took an early 4-3 lead, after back to back layups by Pollard.  She scored the first three buckets for the Lady Hornets creating a 6-6 tie, with 7:47 remaining in the 1st quarter. A quick 9-2 run highlighted by Sidney Cook and Kendyl Brooks knocking down their three-point shots, gave the Hokies a 15-8 lead.

Mikah Aldridge drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 15-11 with 2:53 left remaining. However, the Hokies ended the quarter on a 12-1 run. Vanessa Panousis made back to back three's during their spurt to give them a 27-12 lead.

Virginia Tech outscored Delaware State 25-9 in the second quarter. The Hokies started the second quarter with a 13-3 run.  They scored 28 points on 13 turnovers in the first half and held a 52-21 lead heading into halftime.

The Hokies took a 71-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

They led by as many as 46 points, after a Samantha Hill three-pointer.

The Lady Hornets connected on 19 of their 63 shot attempts (30.8%). They made 4 of 18 shots from three points range (22.2%).

The Hokies knocked down 34 of their 76 shot attempts (44.7%). They drained 11 of 26 attempts from behind the arc (42.3%).

Lady Hornets will return home on Jan. 5, 2017 to take on Cornell in a 6 p.m. contest in Memorial Hall.
