Dover, Del. (Jan. 20, 2016) --- Howard outscored Delaware State 15-4 during an eight-minute stretch of the second half to key a 71-67 MEAC win over the Hornets in the completion of a game that was suspended on Jan. 11 in Memorial Hall today.
The Bison won for the second time in three games to improve to 9-10 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC. DSU dropped its fourth straight to fall to 1-17 and 0-4.
Howard was ahead 41-38 when the game resumed at the 15:41 mark of the second half.
The Hornets nailed three-point shots on four consecutive possessions to take the lead midway through the second half.
Scott Sill nailed the first two three-pointers during the spurt and Dana Raysor capped off the rally with the next two treys. Raysor's second triple gave DSU a 54-51 lead with 9:34 left to play.
Howard answered with a 5-0 run, and pulled ahead 56-54 on a Tyler Stone basket at 6:08 of the second half. The Hornets forced the 10th tie of the game, 56-56, when Mrdjan Gasevic hit a lay-up off a feed from Sill on the ensuing possession.
Howard scored the next six points to lead for good. Stone scored four points during spurt, including a jumper to give the visitors a 62-56 lead with 2:44 remaining.
The Bison hit nine-of-10 Â free throws in the final 1:33 of the game to seal the win.
James Daniels, the nation's leading scorer at 28.5 points per game entering the contest, was high man for Howard with 23 points.
Stone and Marcel Boyd each recorded double-doubles for the Bison. Stone had 18 points (8-10 FTs) and 10 rebounds, while Boyd tallied 13 points (9-10 FTs) and 10 boards.
DeAndre Haywood had a season-high 23 points to lead the Hornets. He has 18 before the game was suspended on Jan. 11
Raysor added 14 points, while Sill matched his career-best with 12 points and set a new high with seven rebounds for DSU.
Delaware State had more field goals (23-to-19) Â and more three-pointers (nine-to-three) than the Bison, but Howard held a 30-to-12 edge at the free throw line.
The Hornets were also outrebounded 44-34.
Delaware State will also play its next four games at home, beginning with a visit from North Carolina Central on Sat. (Jan. 23) at 4 p.m.
