(Dover, Del.) – Sunday afternoon, the Delaware State softball team (17-21, 11-4 MEAC) pulled out a 4-0 win over the visiting Howard Bison (14-27, 8-10 MEAC) to secure its third consecutive series sweep over a MEAC opponent, led by the play of freshmen Vanessa Washington, Dominique Little and Khaliyah Flournory.
With this victory, the Hornets extended their season-long winning streak to 10 games, surpassing last season's consecutive win total (9). DSU also defeated Howard for the 13th straight time, including 14 out of the last 15 meetings.
Washington, who was named MEAC Rookie of the Week on Monday for the second straight time, put the Hornets ahead 2-0 with a pair of RBI-singles in the first and third innings, whereas Flournory (1) blasted a two-run bomb off starter Alex Flynn (6-8) in the fourth. Little, meanwhile, went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Also at the plate, outfielder Nicole Gazzola went 1-for-3 to extend her hit streak to a season-high 14 games.
Securing her third shutout victory of the season was sophomore Tara Tursellino (12-14), who despite allowing nine HU hits, surrendered no walks and tallied three strikeouts. Howard, on the other hand, stranded eight batters on the bag in its seventh shutout loss of the year.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will close out the regular season at home this weekend against the UMES Hawks. Last season, Delaware State took all three games against the Hawks on the road, capped off by an 8-4 eight-inning win to secure a share of the MEAC Northern division title.
