THE GAME
Delaware State (13-15; 7-6 MEAC) wraps up its 2014-15 home schedule against Hampton with a chance to move into the fifth spot in the MEAC standings. The Hornets are currently sixth in the
conference race. DSU is coming off a 69-65 home loss to UMES on Saturday, its third defeat in the last four games. The Hornets were plagued by poor second half shooting in the contest. Delaware State hit just eight-of-30 second half shots (26.7%) after going 16-for-31 from the field in the first 20 minutes (51.6%). Amere May led three Delaware State players in double-figures with a game-high 26 points, his sixth straight game with at least 20. May's performance was highlighted by five three-point field goals (5-8). Tyshawn Bell added 17 points and Kendal Williams 15 in the contest. Hornet center Kendall Gray tied the school record for the fourth time with eight blocks in the game. He also tied for game-high honors with 11 rebounds, his 20th double-figure rebound game this season.
Hampton (12-15; 8-6 MEAC) currently occupies the fifth spot in the MEAC standings. The Pirates have won four of their last five games, including a 68-67 victory at Howard on Saturday. Quenton Chievous hit the winning basket with seven seconds left to play. Hampton led 40-33 at the break, but trailed by five with less than two minutes to play in the game. Deron Powers led the Pirates with 23 points (8-for-13 FGs) and five assists, while Chievous came off the bench to score 11 points and grab 10 rebounds. Dwight Meikle leads the Pirates in scoring this season at 12.5 ppg to rank 15th in the MEAC. Chievous averages 10.8 points and is 14th in the MEAC in rebounding at 6.5 per game. Powers is fifth in the league in assists (3.7 pg).
DSU vs. HAMPTON SERIES HISTORY (DSU leads 26-23 )
The Hornets and Pirates are meeting for the second time in nine days. Delaware State won this
season's first meeting 74-71 on Feb. 21 in Hampton, Va. Amere May scored 30 points, including 24 in the second half, to lead the Hornets in the first meeting. The Pirates had the final shot of the game, but Brian Darden missed a running three-point shot as time expired. The Hornets trailed 36-27 at the half, but outscored Hampton 47-35 in the final 20 minutes. DSU was 17-for-32 from the floor (53.1%) in the second half. Kendal Williams added 17 points for the Hornets in the contest. Reginald Johnson led four Hampton players in double-figures with 17 points, while Quinton Chievous added 16. The last time the teams met at Delaware State, Hampton came out on top 73-60 during the 2013-14 season.
