THE GAME
Delaware State (13-15; 7-6 MEAC) begins its final homestand of the 2014-15 season against arch-rival Maryland-Eastern Shore in a crucial MEAC contest. The Hornets are tied with Hampton for fifth in the MEAC race. DSU is coming off an 81-71 loss to second place Norfolk State last Monday. The Hornets led 35-30 at the half, but were outscored 51-36 in the final 20 minutes. Norfolk State was 19-for-33 from the floor in the second half (57.6%) to take control of the game. DSU's Amere May led all players with 26 points in the contest, but was held to just six points in the second half. May, the MEAC's leading scorer at 20.0 ppg this season, is averaging 27.8 points in the last five games. Kendal Williams had eight points, while Tyshawn Bell and Kavon Waller scored 10 each in DSU's last outing.
UMES (16-13; 9-5 MEAC), picked 11th in the 2014-15 MEAC preseason poll, is tied with Howard for third in the conference standings. The Hawks have won two straight since falling to the Hornets on Feb. 14, including a 68-56 victory over South Carolina State last Saturday in their most recent outing. Devin Martin led the Hawks with 22 points in the contest. Martin was eight-for-14 from the floor, including three-of-four on three-point shots. Michael Myers added 17 points for the Hawks in their last game. Myers is tops on the team and tied for fifth in the MEAC in scoring at 16.1 points game. He's also tied for eight in the conference in rebounding (7.1 pg) and third in field goal percentage (.597). Martin is 10th in the MEAC in scoring at 14.2 points per contest.
DSU vs. UMES SERIES HISTORY (DSU leads 54-48)
The Hornets and Hawks are meeting or the second time in two weeks. Delaware State won the first meeting 91-85 on Feb. 14 in Princess Anne, Md. The Hornets never trailed in the game, but withstood some tense moments in the contest. Delaware State led by as many as 18 points in the second half before the Hawks clawed to within two in the final minute. Kendal Williams led four Hornets in double-figures with a career-high 22 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals. Williams also led the Hornets with five assists. Amere May added 20 points, including an off-balanced jumper in the lane to give the Hornets an 89-85 lead with 12 seconds left to play. Tyshawn Bell contributed 19 points and Kendall Gray 15 for the Hornets. Michael Myers led four UMES players in double figures with a game-high 23 points. The last time the teams met at Delaware State, the Hornets posted an 84-71 win during the 2013-14 season. DSU has won six of the last 11 meetings between the teams to open up a 54-48 lead in the series.
