THE GAME
The Hornets (11-13; 5-4 MEAC) look to continue their recent rise in the MEAC standings against
Coppin State. DSU has won its last two games to climb from sixth to fourth in the league race. The Hornets are coming off a thrilling 91-85 road win at UMES on Saturday. Delaware State never trailed in the contest but experienced some tense moments down the stretch. Kendal Williams led four Delaware State players in double-figures with a career-high 22 points in the contest, highlighted by four three-point field goals (4-7). Williams also led the Hornets with five assists. Amere May added 20 points, including An off-balanced jumper in the lane to give DSU an 89-85 lead with 12 seconds left to play. Tyshawn Bell contributed 19 points, including five three-pointers, and Kendall Gray 15 to the win. The Hornets are 1/2 game behind third place Howard (7-4) in the MEAC standings. Howard plays at UMES Monday evening.
Coppin State (14-12; 7-4 MEAC) is trying to snap a two-game losing streak. The Eagles are coming off a 77-60 home loss to Howard on Saturday. Howard shot 54.3% from the field (25-for-46), including five-of-nine from three-point territory (55.6%) in the game. Taariq Cephas led CSU with 18 points, while Sterling Smith added 17 for CSU in the contest. Smith leads the Eagles in scoring at 12.9 points per game, while Cephas is second on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg) and tops in assists with 120 to rank second in the MEAC at 4.8 per game. Arnold Fripp is the team's top rebounder at 5.9 per game. Smith also has a team-high 58 three-point field goals.
DSU vs. COPPIN STATE SERIES HISTORY (CSU leads 43-27 )
This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the Hornets and Eagles this season.
CSU swept two meetings between the teams last year, winning 73-54 at Delaware State and 54-53 on its home court to open up a 43-27 lead in the series. Cephas had 12 points and 10 assists in Coppin's 2013-14 win at DSU. Kendal Williams had a team-high 18 points for the Hornets the last time the teams met at Delaware State. Coppin State is currently 10th in the 2014-15 MEAC standings. The Hornets and Eagles are scheduled to meet again in the regular season finale on Mar. 5 at Coppin State in Baltimore, Md.
