(Florence, S.C.) – In the opening round of the Independent Conference Tournament, the top-seeded Delaware State women's soccer team (7-9-3) went unscathed on its way to a convincing 11-0 victory over the No. 4 seeded Hampton Pirates (0-9) Friday afternoon.
With this win, the Hornets not only advanced to Sunday's championship round, but the Columbia Blue & Red tied a program single-season record for most wins (7). HU, meanwhile, wrapped up its first season of competition being outscored 111-4 in nine games.
Picking up its first victory since a 2-0 win at Marist on Oct. 16, Friday night's performance featured DSU setting season-high totals in points (30), assists (8), shots on-goal (24) and corner kicks (15). The Hornets also tied a season-high in goals scored (11), which occurred in their home finale shutout victory over the Pirates on Oct. 11.
In the first half, DSU hung six on the Pirates, beginning with midfielder Elise Pratt finding Taylor Addison (3) during the 14th minute. After an own goal during the 19th minute, midfielder Danielle Valente (3, 4) connected for back-to-back unassisted goals, whereas scores by forward Taylor Love (4) and midfielder Kym Brewton (2) put the Hornets up 6-0 at the break.
Defensively, sophomore Michele Lammers (7-9-3) went unchallenged throughout the majority of the first 45 minutes, registering just one stop. Freshman Leslie Fazio, meanwhile, went on to play the entire second half in relief of Lammers.
After intermission, Addison hooked up with forward Bri Musco (4, 5) during the 48th and 52nd minutes, while defender Briana Villa (2, 3) got in on the action with back-to-back strikes to put the Hornets up, 10-0. Rounding out the evening's scoring onslaught was Villa finding midfielder Dina Isham (3) during the 79th minute.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will await the winner of host No. 2 Francis Marion and No. 3 South Carolina State, which is set to kickoff at 7 p.m. Against the Pats, DSU is 0-2 all-time, while the Hornets hold a 5-12-1 overall mark against the Bulldogs.
