(Dover, Del.) – In the third edition of the #HornetSpotlight – exclusively broadcasted DSUHornets.com – forward/center Mrdjan Gasevic of the DSU men's basketball team answered a handful of questions, ranging from how life was growing in Serbia to how he plans on being more than an energy player off the bench in 2015-16:
DSUHornets.com: What made you come to Delaware State?
MG: I went to a prep school in Dallas, Texas. My coach, Coach Mathews, and his wife Cher, and I were there for six months. So of course, Coach [Keith] Walker recruited me and talked to Coach Matt and they both agreed that it would be a great chance for me and opportunity to come here and play Division I basketball.
DSUHornets.com: Who was your favorite player growing up?
MG: Kevin Garnett. Right now it's Lamarcus Aldridge definitely…that's the best one, that's two of them. Those two are the best.
DSUHornets.com: How is the culture different between here and back home in Serbia?
MG: It's very, very different. When I first came here I was in shock. I had to adjust my behavior. I had issues with that, but I got adjusted and people adjust different. Me being here by myself without my friends and my family, it was a tough one.
DSUHornets.com: What was it like growing up over there?
MG: Growing up, I had a lot of friends when I was young so we used to go outside, play basketball, play around, it was nice. Being in my family that's the most important thing for me so it was easy, it was nice.
DSUHornets.com: What's some advice that you have for some possible college athletes over in Serbia, who want to come over here and play?
MG: They have to be able to modify their behavior, come here with a goal and push hard. Sometimes it's going to be hard without the family, but I'm a man on a mission with a goal to be successful and that's it.
DSUHornets.com: Did you play any other sports over there in Serbia?
MG: I was a goalkeeper for two years but I picked basketball.
DSUHornets.com: This year coming in, you're probably going to play a huge roll replacing Kendall Gray. What are some of the things you did in the off-season to get ready?
MG: I think I'm in the best shape of my life. I lost a couple pounds, worked hard all summer and I'm determined. We made it to the finals last year, we lost unfortunately but we'll be right back there. I worked on my game hard and I'm glad I had the chance to play with people like KG and Tyshawn Bell. I learned a lot from them and I think I'm ready to lead this team now.
DSUHornets.com: Now, you're more like the energy guy on the team. Is that going to be your same role this year?
MG: Yes, sir. I have to make this team listen to me and run with me, so I will do my best to lead them.
