HORNETS UPEND BULLDOGS BEHIND GRAY'S MONSTER PERFORMANCE

Dover, Del. (Jan. 17, 2015) --- Kendall Gray had 16 points, a career-high 23 rebounds, five blocks and five assists to lead Delaware State to a 60-49 MEAC win over South Carolina State in Memorial Hall today.

The Hornets won their second in a row to improve to 8-9 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC. The Bulldogs lost for the sixth time in the last seven  games to fall to 5-14 and 3-2.

Gray 's rebound total in the contest is tops in the MEAC and second among all NCAA Division I players in a game this season. This marks the second straight Saturday that he posted a career rebound high.

Gray had 22 boards against Morgan State on Jan. 10, the third-best total in a Division I game this season.

The Dover, Del., native has 89 rebounds in the last five games (17.8 pg). He was tops in the MEAC and third in the nation in rebounding at 12.0 per game entering the contest.

His five blocks in the game give him 50 this season and 260 for his career. Gray is the Hornets' career blocks leader.

He was No. 1 in the MEAC and 14th in the nation in blocks entering the game.

Gray also posted his fifth straight double-double, and 11th for the season, while his five assists today were also a career high..

Amere May added 16 points and Kendal Williams 10 for the Hornets today.

Edward Stephens was high scorer for South Carolina State with 13 points.

The Hornets outscored the Bulldogs 34-18 in the second half after trailing by five at intermission.

Delaware State scored the first nine points of the second half, and opened up a 35-31 lead on a three-pointer by May with 16:41 left to play.

The score was 39-39 when the Hornets ran off eight unanswered points to open up some breathing room.

Todd Hughes capped off the run with a jumper to give DSU a 47-39 lead at the 7:35 mark of the second half.

After the Bulldogs closed to within 47-46 before the Hornets pulled away again.

May hit his second three-pointer of the game and Gray had a three-point play to key a 7-0 DSU run. Charles Burley capped off the rally with two free throws to give the Hornets a 54-46 lead with 3:03 remaining in the game.

The Hornets got off to a good start in the contest, opening up a 10-4 lead on a jumper by Williams with 12:47 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs responded with a 16-4 run, and opened up a 20-14 lead on a three-pointer by  Stephens at the 8:08 mark of the first half.

SC State led 26-19 before DSU clawed back. The Hornets scored the next seven points, and tied the score at 26 on a basket and free throw by Gray with 1:14 to go before halftime.

The Bulldogs scored on their next two possessions, including a three-pointer by Ty Solomon at the first half buzzer to lead 31-26 at the break.

Delaware State was 23-for-59 from the field (39.0%), including five-of-16 from three-point territory (31,3%). The Hornets were nine-or-16 from the free throw line (56.3%).

South Carolina shot 26.5% from the floor (18-for-68) and 32.1% from beyond the arc (nine-for-28). The Bulldogs were just four-of-11 at the line (36.4%).

Delaware State outrebounded the Bulldogs 55-38 in the game.

Daniel Ochefu of Villanova has the top rebound game in Division I this season with 24 ... South Carolina State's 49 points were the fewest for a Delaware State opponent this season … The Hornets have four straight against the Bulldogs in Memorial Hall.
