DSU THROTTLES HOWARD 18-1 IN SERIES FINALE TO TAKE SWEEP

(Washington, D.C.) – After sweeping yesterday's doubleheader handily, the Delaware State softball team (29-15, 12-3 MEAC) pushed its winning streak to five Sunday afternoon with a five-inning 18-1 blowout victory on the road over the Howard Bison (4-36, 3-15 MEAC).

Leading 2-1 after two, the Hornets blew the game wide open in the third by scoring 11 runs on six hits and three HU errors, capped off by a Jordan Stamps (7) two-run blast, which was her second of the series.

After extending its lead to 13 in the fourth, Delaware State continued its high-scoring afternoon by scoring four runs during the fifth, beginning with an Nkili Matthews RBI-single up the middle, followed by Chloe Oro churning out a two-run RBI-double.  To finish things off, outfielder Nicole Gazzola drove in Matthews from third with a single up the middle.

At game's end, the Hornets finished with 14 hits, headlined by four players recording multi-hit performances.  Leading the way was catcher Sandy Hawthorne going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. Stamps and outfielder Jessica Madrid, meanwhile, both went 2-for-4, whereas Stamps finished with five RBI and Madrid totaled three.

Pitching wise, freshman Tara Tursellino (11-5) picked up the victory Sunday allowing four hits, no walks and fanning four HU batters.

To conclude its high octane weekend at the plate, DSU batted .409 with 36 hits, including eight doubles, seven home runs and 31 RBI to outscore the Bison, 39-3.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will begin the final week of the regular season this Wednesday against St. Joseph's for a doubleheader.
