TERPS TOO MUCH TO HANDLE FOR HORNETS IN MIDWEEK CLASH

(College Park, Md.) – The Delaware State softball team (22-13) found themselves down early and often on the road Wednesday evening to the ACC's Maryland Terrapins (5-30) as the Hornets fell 10-2 in five innings.

In the first, Maryland took a 4-0 lead, headlined by a Lindsey Schmeiser solo bomb and Kylie Datil connecting for a two-run blast to left, both off starter Rachel Meagley (5-4).  For Meagley, her night was short-lived as Vanessa Ciocatto (8-5) was inserted later in the frame.

The Hornets, meanwhile, got on the board during the second with catcher Sandy Hawthorne scoring from second after outfielder Jordan Stamps reached on an error.  Later in the inning, DSU managed to load the bases with one out after a Danielle Velez single, but the Terps got out of the jam with outfielder Kaitlyn Slater striking out looking and infielder Chloe Oro grounding out.

Two innings later, same score, the Hornets cut the deficit in half with a two-out Nkili Matthews RBI-single, yet the Terps would answer and not look back after Oro grounded out.

For the Terps in the fourth, Erin Pronobis smacked a two-run homer to right, followed by Amanda McCann doubling to left and later scoring during the sequence off a DSU error to make it a 7-2 ball game.  Maryland tacked on another run during the inning with a Candice Beards sac-fly RBI.

To close the game, Stange churned out a RBI-single and later advanced to third during the sequence after DSU's second error of the night, ensued by a Corey Schwartz RBI-bunt to seal the win.

At game's end, the Terps finished with 11 hits and tallied nine RBI, compared to Delaware State's six hits as Sablay went 2-for-3 to lead all Hornet players.

Pitching wise, Kaitlyn Schmeiser (4-9) picked up the win for Maryland surrendering one earned run, a walk and fanning six DSU batters.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will return to face MEAC foe Norfolk State this Friday (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).
