HAMPTON TOO MUCH FOR HORNETS IN MEAC CONTEST

Hampton, Va. (Nov. 7, 2014) ---Hampton held on to a share of first place in the MEAC Northern Division with a 3-0 win over Delaware State this evening. The scores were 25-20, 25-14 and 25-14.

The Pirates won for the sixth time in their last seven contests to improve to 16-10 overall and 9-1 in the MEAC North.  The Hornets dropped their ninth straight contest to fall to 1-24 and 1-9.

Delaware State played close in the first set. The Hornets led 7-4 after a kill by Nevershi Ellis (fr.) off a feed from Natalia Mendieta (jr.). The score was 14-14 before Hampton scored six of the next seven points to open up a 20-15 lead. Delaware State capped off a 5-0 run with a kill by Alliyah McBean (fr.) to pull to within 21-20. The Pirates scored the last four points to win the set.

Hampton's Vendula Strakova led all players with 15 kills and 17 digs. Strakova had one error on 28 total attempts for a .500 hitting percentage in the contest.

Sonja Maksimovic had 11 kills for the Pirates.

Ellis led Delaware State with nine kills. Jasmine Jackson (jr.) and Jae Jackson (so.) had five kills each for the Hornets.

Ayanna Lee (fr.) led DSU with 11 digs.

Hampton held a big advantage in hitting. The Pirates tallied 44 kills and 10 errors on 94 attacks for a .362 hitting percentage.

The Hornets posted a .071 attack percentage, collecting 25 kills and 18 errors on 98 attempts.

The Pirates had 44 digs, compared to 33 for DSU.

The Hornets will play their final road match of the season this Sunday (Nov. 9) at Norfolk State. The MEAC contest begins at 3 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
