Dover, Del. (Nov. 14, 2014) --- Hampton clinched one of two top spots in the upcoming MEAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over Delaware State in the Hornets' season finale in Memorial Hall this evening. The scores were 25-16, 25-22 and 25-13.
The Pirates improved to 18-10 overall and 11-1 in the MEAC, while the Hornets closed out their season at 1-26 and 1-11.
Hampton's Vendula Strakova led all players with 16 kills and tied two others for the team high with seven digs.
Jasmine Jackson (jr.) was tops on the Hornets with 14 kills, while teammate Ayanna Lee (fr.) led all players with 10 digs.
In the first set, Hampton opened up a 9-4 lead on a Delaware State error. The Pirates stretched their lead to 13-7 on a kill by Strakova.
The Hornets could get no closer than four points the rest of the set.
The second set featured nine ties. Delaware State trailed 5-3 in the early going, but used a 4-0 run to open up a 7-5 lead.
The Hornets held their last lead of the set, 18-17, after a bad set call on the Pirates. Hampton responded by scoring the next five points to open up a 22-18 lead.
Delaware State led 4-3 in the third set before Hampton took control. The Pirates ran off the next six points to open up a 9-4 lead.
Hampton built its biggest lead, 22-8, on a kill by Strakova off a feed from Kitija Megne.
The Pirates posted a .393 hitting percentage in the match, tallying 43 kills and just right errors on 89 attacks.
Delaware State had 27 kills and 18 errors on 80 attempts for a .112 attack percentage in the match.
The Hornets collected 31 digs compared to 27 for the Pirates.
Hampton was credited with 14 blocks, while Delaware State recorded four.
The contest also marked the final collegiate appearance for Delaware State senior Brooke Redmon, who was honored prior to the match.
Redmon had two kills in the match to give her 283 with the Hornets. She also tallied 168 blocks and 87 digs in her career.
