HAWKINS NAMED MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR THE SECOND TIME OF 2013-14

(Norfolk, Va.) – Monday afternoon, forward Tierra Hawkins was named MEAC Player of the Week for the second time this season, which also marks the second time in her stellar career she's received this honor.

Despite DSU's 70-64 loss at MEAC foe Howard this past Tuesday, Hawkins totaled a game-high 26 points (10-of-18) and a career-high 16 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.  With this point total, Hawkins moved into ninth (1,194) all-time on DSU's scoring list.

She also went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw, and added two assists, one steal and one block while playing all 40 minutes against HU.

For the season, the Clinton, Md. native, is averaging 22.4 points per game, which is second in the MEAC and 15th in the nation, while her .533 field goal percentage is good for second in the conference behind teammate Deanna Harmon (.558).

Rebounding wise, Hawkins is second (10.7 rpg) in the conference and is the only player in the MEAC averaging 20+ points and 10+ rebounds per contest.

In addition, she is shooting 76 percent (48-of-63) from the charity stripe, along with tallying 12 steals and a team-best 10 blocks.

Coming up, Hawkins and the rest of the Lady Hornets (3-9, 0-2 MEAC) will look to snap a six-game losing skid this Tuesday (5:30 p.m.), which will be the first of a three-game homestand for DSU.
