(Dover, Del.) – In what was its first match at home since Sept. 1, the Delaware State women's soccer team (0-8) fell 2-0 to the visiting Wagner Seahawks (7-2-1) Friday evening under the lights.
In the first half, no score, the Seahawks capitalized on a fast break opportunity during the 18th minute when midfielder Megan Fritz (1) made a pass to the team's leading scorer, Sydney McCarthy (4), near midfield. With the ball her grasp, McCarthy dribbled deep into Hornet territory and beat keeper Katelyn Koslosky (0-8) for the score.
Despite being in a hole, DSU's defense kept Wagner scoreless the rest of the half, even with the Seahawks tallying 12 shots, compared to the Hornets' two. In the net, meanwhile, Koslosky picked up six saves.
After intermission, Delaware State did not go away quietly as its defense kept the Seahawks at the bay. Coming into tonight's contest, Wagner averaged 2.11 goals per game.
Offensively, the Hornets' best opportunity to tie the match occurred during the 55th minute when midfielder Julia Bossert found forward Taylor Addison deep in Wagner territory near the center of the net. Nevertheless, Addison's shot sailed high as the Seahawks took over.
With DSU still down 1-0, the Seahawks put the match out of reach during the 85th minute when Fritz (2) collected her second assist of the night by finding a streaking Samantha Jensen (3) on the right wing in DSU territory. With Koslosky charging, Jensen put it past the goalkeeper's reach for the score.
When the final buzzer sounded, Wagner attempted 19 shots, including nine placed on-goal. In the case of DSU, it finished with five attempts, whereas Koslosky totaled a game-high seven saves.
Coming up, the Hornets will conclude their weekend slate at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday (1 p.m.).
