Charlottesville, Va. (Apr. 10, 2013) --- Delaware State's season-best seven-game win game to an end at Atlantic Coast Conference Virginia today. The Cavaliers took two from the Hornets 9-1 and 10-1.
In the opener, Virginia's Melanie Mitchell tossed a five-hit complete game to earn the win. The Cavaliers opened the scoring with five runs in the second inning, highlighted by Marcy Bowdren's three-run double.
Delaware State cut Virginia's lead to 5-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Kelsey Lewis singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a double by Sandy Hawthorne.
The Cavaliers scored two runs on the fourth and fifth innings, bringing an to the game due to the eight-run rule.
In the nightcap, the Hornets got on the board first with the run in the opening inning. Jess Madrid started the rally with a one-out single. She moved to third base on two wild pitches and came home on a single by Rochelle Sablay.
Virginia answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Cavaliers blew the game open with seven runs in the third.
Madrid had two of the Hornets' five hits in the nightcap.
Delaware State returns to MEAC action at Coppin State in Baltimore, Md., this weekend. The Hornets and Eagles will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1:00 p.m. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday.
