Jacksonville, Fla. (Mar. 1, 2013) --- Delaware State scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic 7-6 walk-off win over St. Bonaventure in the opening round of the Osprey Invitational at North Florida University today. The win was the first of the season for the Hornets.
DSU dropped its second tournament game to host North Florida to finish 1-1 on the day.
In the St. Bonaventure contest, DSU trailed 6-0 after five innings and 6-3 before its last at bat.
Delaware State's Jessica Madrid singled in Jordan Stamps with the winning run to cap off the four-run rally.
Rochelle Sablay doubled to lead off the seventh for the Hornets. Kelsey Doherty followed with a single to give DSU runners on first and third with none out. The next batter, Jen Fischbach, reached on an error to load the bases. Jordan Stamps then singled to left center, scoring Sablay and Doherty to cut the Bonnies' lead to 6-5. The next batter, Nicole Gazzolla, reached on another St. Bonaventure error. Pinch runner Kelsey Lewis scored on the play to tie the game at 6-6.
Madrid followed with the game winning single to left field.
St. Bonaventure scored four runs in the first inning and single runs in the third and fifth to open up a 6-0 lead.
The Hornets began their comeback with three runs in the last of the sixth.
Doherty began DSU's sixth inning rally with a one-out double. Fischbach followed with a single to give the Hornets runners on third and first. Stamps then tripled to left center, scoring Doherty and Fischbach with Delaware State's first two runs. Gazzolla followed with a single to score Stamps, cutting St. Bonaventure's lead to 6-3. The Hornets failed to do further damage in the sixth by leaving the bases loaded.
Stamps was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, while Doherty and Madrid also had three hits in the St. Bonaventure contest.
Delaware State had a season high 15 hits in the game. Fischbach (1-0) was also the winning pitcher.
In the North Florida contest, Kayla Goff held the Hornets to six singles in the shutout win. The Ospreys scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Doherty had two of DSU's six hits in the game.
