Dover, Del, (Dec. 2, 2013) --- Tyshawn Bell and Kendal Williams had career-high scoring marks to lead Delaware State to a 72-47 win over Baptist Bible in Memorial Hall this evening.
Bell scored a game-high 19 points on seven-for-11 shooting from the field, including two-of-four from three-point territory. He was also perfect on three free throws. Bell's previous career-high was 15 points in three games.
Williams tallied 18 points. He was seven-for-eight from the floor, highlighted by four three-pointers (4-5), tops for a DSU player this season. His previous high was 14 points in his Hornet debut vs. Cairn on Nov. 9.
Casey Walker contributed 15 points and a game-high seven rebounds to the win.
Luke Peterson was high scorer for Baptist Bible with 14 points, while Dan Dodd added 12.
The game was evenly played in the first eight minutes.
The score was 14-14 when Delaware State took the lead for good, although the Defenders stayed close throughout the first half.
The Hornets opened up a 19-14 lead on a three-pointer by DeAndre Haywood with 9:55 left in the first half. DSU opened up a double-digit lead (35-25) on a lay-up by Nick Doyle off a feed from Williams with 2:28 to go before halftime.
Bell had 14 points to help lead the Hornets to a 39-27 advantage at the break.
Baptist Bible scored seven of the first 10 points of the second half, and pulled to within 42-34 on free throw by Dodd with 15:22 left to play.
The Hornets answered with a 13-1 run, and opened up a 55-35 lead on a lay-up by Haywood with 12:00 remaining. Williams, Walker and Haywood nailed three-pointers on consecutive possessions to highlight the rally.
After the Defenders pulled to within 57-43, the Hornets used a 13-0 run to put the game away. Bell capped off the spurt with a three-pointer to give DSU a 70-43 lead with 2:54 remaining in the game. Williams scored 10 consecutive points for the Hornets during the rally, including two three-pointers.
Williams has climbed to fourth on the Hornets in scoring at 8.3 points per game. He's also tied for second on the team with 17 assists and is third with eight three-pointers.
Delaware State had nine three-pointers in the contest, the most since nailing 10 against Cairn in the season opener on Nov. 9.
The victory was the 198th at DSU for head coach Greg Jackson, who has moved to within three of the school-record 201 by the late Bennie George, who coached the Hornets from 1949-71.
Delaware State returns to action on Wednesday (Dec. 4) at #25 Dayton. Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Dayton, OH.
