Atlanta, Ga. (Nov. 11, 2013) --- Delaware State cut a 19-point second half deficit to eight before running out of steam in a 68-50 loss to Georgia Tech at McCamish Pavilion this evening. The Hornets fell to 1-1 while the Atlantic Coast Conference Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0.
Georgia Tech led 31-18 at the break and scored the first six points of the second half to open up a 37-18 lead.
The Hornets continued to battle and pulled to within 50-42 on a three-pointer by Tyshawn Bell with 5:32 left to play. The basket by Bell capped off a 19-9 DSU run. Georgia Tech hit just four-of-12 shots from the field and committed five turnovers during the Hornet spurt.
Casey Walker knocked down two three-pointers and Kendall Gray had two baskets during the rally.
The Yellow Jackets answered with a 9-0 run of their own, and opened up a 59-42 lead after Solomon Poole hit two free throws with 3:45 remaining.
The Hornets shot 46.2% in the second half (12-for-26) after hitting just seven-of-30 shots in the first 20 minutes (23.3%).
Bell led DSU with 15 points, while Walker and Gray added nine each. Walker also had a game-high 10 rebounds for the second straight outing. It marked the first in his career with back-to-back double figure rebound games. Gray was forced to sit out a good portion of the second half after drawing his fourth foul.
Bell now has 98 three-point field goals in his career.
Nick Doyle came off the bench to score six points on three-of-five shooting for the Hornets. Doyle also dished out two assists.
Kendal Williams had eight points for the Hornets, giving him 22 in his first two games at DSU. Charles Burley, starting at point guard in place of injured A.J. Thomas (ankle) had a team-high five assists for Delaware State.
Trae Gordon led three Georgia Tech players in double figures with 16 points (7-10 FGs). Marcus Georges-Hunt and Robert Carter, Jr., added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Yellow Jackets.
Delaware State held its own on the boards against the bigger Jackets. Georgia Tech had 30 rebounds, while the Hornets pulled down 28.
Each team had 12 turnovers.
The Hornets were whistled for 19 fouls, resulting in 20 free throws (18-for-20) for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets committed 11 fouls. DSU was six-for-nine at the line.
The Hornets will stay in ACC country for their next game. The Hornets will visit Clemson on Wednesday. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
DSU will also travel to George Washington (Nov. 19) before returning home to face Delaware on Nov. 25 (7:00 p.m.).
