Washington, D.C. (Oct. 27, 2013) --- The Delaware State University volleyball team won the first set and was tied late in game two, but ran out of steam in a 3-1 loss to MEAC North second place Howard today.
The scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20.
Jessica Croucher had four kills in the first set and Jasmine Jackson added three to lead the Hornets to the game one win. The first set was tied for the fifth time at 19-19 when DSU scored four of the next five points to take control. The Hornets scored the winning point on an ace by Taylor Marshall.
In the second game was close throughout. The biggest lead in the set by either team was three points. Howard led 20-19 when the Hornets tied the game on a block by Croucher and Jae Jackson. DSU trailed 24-23 when the Bison closed out the game on a kill by Stephanie Shultis.
Howard used a 6-0 run to take control of game three. The Bison led 8-7 before the rally. Howard opened up its biggest lead of the game, 21-12, on a DSU error.
The fourth game was tied 11 times before Howard took control. Delaware State led 12-10 in the set before surrendering the next three points to fall behind. The score was 15-15 when Howard took the lead for good on a kill by Katherine Broussard.
Delaware State had a .158 hitting percentage (35 kills/17 errors/114 attacks) in the match. Croucher led the Hornets with 10 kills, while Jasmine Jackson added nine. Edarkis Branch was tops on the team with 10 digs, while Ariana Stevens had a team-high three blocks.
Broussard led all players with 17 kills for Howard, which posted a .221 hitting percentage in the match (63/30/149).
The Hornets fell to 2-18 overall and 0-8 in the MEAC North. Howard improved to 18-8 and 6-2.
Delaware State returns to action on Friday (Nov. 1) at home against Coppin State. The match gets underway at 5:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
