JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Stephanie Sarris (Rohnert Park, Calif.) struck out a season-high five batters and senior Jordan Reid (Accokeek, Md.) legged out a two-RBI inside the park home run as the Delaware State University softball team wrapped up their 13-game Florida swing to open the season with a 4-2 victory over the University of North Florida on Day Three of the Osprey Invitational at the UNF Softball Complex.
Sarris notched her third win of the season giving up six hits and two runs (both earned) as the Hornets open the year with a 5-8 record.
Delaware State got on board first, recording two runs in the top of the third inning. Senior Chelsea Stern (Owings, Md.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Reid followed with her inside the park home run to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
The Ospreys tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as they knocked out three hits.
The Hornets responded in the top of the fifth with another two runs to take the 4-2 advantage. Sophomore Ashlyn Campbell (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), leading off as a pinch-hitter for junior Skye Boris (Magnolia, Del.), singled through the left side. Junior Kelsey Lewis (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) came in to pinch-run for Campbell and eventually scored on an error by UNF shortstop Kelly Dill to go up, 3-2. Reid reached base and advanced to second on the same error. Senior Tawny Reeger (Simi Valley, Calif.) singled up the middle to move Reid to third and eventually score on another miscue by the Ospreys.
Each team recorded just one hit in the final frames.
Senior Alyson Bailey went 3-for-3 with a double and run scored for UNF.
DSU swept three games against UNF (10-12) this past week.
The Hornets welcome St. Joseph's to the Hornets' Nest for a doubleheader to open their home slate this coming Saturday. Game one first pitch is slated for noon.
