THE GAME
The surging Hornets begin a five-game road swing with a visit to Coppin State in a battle between two of the MEAC's hottest teams. Delaware State (9-11; 6-3 MEAC) brings a five-game win streak into the contest. It's the team's longest streak since winning nine in a row during the 2006-07 season. The Hornets are coming off a 77-69 win over defending MEAC champ Hampton on Monday. Casey Walker and Tahj Tate (7-10 FGs) led five DSU players in double figures with 16 points each. Marques Oliver added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Hornets. Jay Threatt contributed 12 points, a season-high 10assists and five steals, while Tyshawn Bell came off the bench to score 12 points for the Hornets. Coppin State has won three straight and four of the last five games to improve to 12-11 and 7-3. The Eagles posted an 88-86 win over crosstown rival Morgan State in their last outing. CSU's Tony Gallo led all players with 28 points, while teammate Akeem Ellis added 21. Gallo is third in the MEAC in scoring at 17.1 points per-game. Coppin State is tied for third in the MEAC standings (7-3), while the Hornets are fifth at 6-3. Norfolk State tops the standings with a 9-2 mark in league play.
DSU VS. COPPIN STATE SERIES HISTORY (CSU leads 41-25)
This is the 67th meeting between the Hornets and Eagles. Coppin State swept two meetings between the teams last season to open up a 41-25 lead in the series. The Eagles won last year's first meeting 65-63 at Delaware State's Memorial Hall, then completed the 2010-11 sweep with an 89-72 victory on their home court in Baltimore. In the first meeting last season, Tony Gallo scored the game-winning basket on a running jumper with three seconds left in the game. This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season.
