STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Continuing to be a
common theme this season, the Delaware State University women's soccer team
struggled with their offense Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 loss to Wagner College.
After
scoring three goals on just six shots on Friday night at Rider, the Hornets
were held scoreless on 12 shots, with four on goal. Junior Jeanette
Salgado (Bergenfield, N.J.) recorded four shots for Del State, with one on
goal. Fellow junior Theresa Wappett (Queensbury, N.Y.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Schech
(Abingdon, Md.) each collected two goals on the afternoon, each having one on
goal.
Freshman
Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) tallied
four saves and allowed just two goals.
"Our
defense continues to play spectacularly," commented DSU head coach Nitan Soni. "Offensively, we need to work as a team in
order to get the shots and goals that we want."
For
the seventh time this season, the Hornets held their opponent scoreless in the
first period of play.
Coming
out of the gates at halftime, Wagner's Jackie Nicholas put the Seahawks on the
board with a give and go shot on the left side with assists from Julie
Vigliotti and Monica Zurich in the 49th minute. Less than ten minutes later, Nicholas netted
Wagner's second goal of the day to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead in the 58th
minute.
Wagner
outshot DSU, 21-21, including 13 shots in the first period.
The
Hornets open Great West Conference play at home on Thursday as they host the
University of North Dakota at 7 p.m. for the first time in school history.
