DOVER, Del. - The intensity was
high in the final minutes, but the Delaware State University women's soccer
team was unable to get a goal as time expired to make a comeback and lost, 2-1,
to Canisius College Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
"If
we stop working as hard as we were, we don't get that chance to score a goal at
the end," said DSU head coach Nitan Soni. "On another day, the ball goes in and you tie
things up, but that didn't happen today."
A
Canisius foul in the 64th minute gave junior Jeanette Salgado (Bergenfield, N.J.) her first goal of the season
and the fourth of her career. Sophomore Darcy Pelz-Butler (Silver Spring, Md.)
took the free kick for the Hornets and passed it off to Salgado, who was
approximately 25 yards out in the middle of the field. Salgado took the header and got it by Griffs
goalie Caroline Robert.
Canisius
scored two goals in the first half, one from Maria Nelms in the 20th
minute and another about 10 minutes later from Brook Bandazian.
The
game was delayed an extra 30 minutes at halftime due to lightning and
thunder. The extra time allowed the
Hornets to collect their thoughts and ramp up their intensity.
"I
definitely believe that the daily helped us," remarked Soni. "We were able to talk to them for a little
bit longer. They came off the field at
half disappointed and there was some tension.
We spent that extra 20 minutes reconnecting and making sure that they
came back onto the field united as a team.
And that is exactly what happened."
The
loss sends DSU to 1-6-1 on the season while Canisius moves over .500 at 3-2-1.
