BALTIMORE, Md. - The Delaware State
University softball bats cranked out 23 hits and 17 runs as they defeated
Morgan State, 11-4 in game one and 6-1 in game two, at Lois T. Murray Field
Saturday afternoon.
Junior Jordan Reid (Accokeek, Md.) led the effort for the Hornets once
again as she went 6-for-9 (.667) from the plate with three runs scored, two
RBI, two doubles, a triple and stolen base.
Senior Andrea Waters (Anchorage, Alaska) also had a successful day on the
offensive end as she went 4-for-8 (.500) with four runs, one RBI, two doubles
and three stolen bases. Additionally,
junior Breanne Parr (Moorpark,
Calif.) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles.
Tied at 2-2, DSU scored three
runs on three hits and one error in the top of the fourth inning to take the
lead for good over the Bears.
Freshman Ashley Davis (Seattle, Wash.) led off the frame reaching on an
error by shortstop Tiffany Rubin and eventually scored on a single from sophomore
Skye Boris (Magnolia, Del.). Reid came up next and singled and
advanced to second on the throw in while pinch runner Kelsey Lewis (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) scored. Reid then scored on an RBI single from junior Rachel Carroll (Oxnard, Calif.).
The Hornets struck again in the
top of the sixth and seventh innings, scoring three runs in each.
Reid doubled and Waters singled
in the sixth before junior Casey
Beighley (Los Angeles, Calif.) smacked a two-RBI single. Beighley moved around the bases and
then scored on a double from freshman Stephanie Martello (Oxnard, Calif.)
before the end of the inning.
Parr led off the top of the
seventh with a single before senior Allison
Rubin (Glen Burnie, Md.) came in as a pinch runner. Rubin then scored off of a double from
Reid. Junior Tawny Reeger (Simi
Valley, Calif.) pinch ran for Reid and scored when Waters doubled down the left
field line. Waters advanced to
third on a wild pitch and then scored before the end of the frame to give DSU
an 11-4 victory.
Freshman Ashlyn Campbell (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) earned her eighth win of
the season as she gave up six hits, four runs (all earned), and one walk while
striking out one in 4.0 innings pitched.
Beighley threw a gem in game two,
going 6.0 innings strong while giving up just one run on three hits to earn her
eighth win of the year.
The Hornets scored a run in the
first, third and fourth innings of the second game before posting another
three-run inning in the sixth.
With two base runners on, Davis
hit an RBI single to make things 4-1.
Parr came up next and slugged a two-RBI double to go up, 6-1. With two outs, Reid tripled to right
field before Waters grounded out to the pitcher to end the frame.
Freshman Stephanie Sarris (Rohnert Park, Calif.) closed out both games for
DSU and pitched a total of 4.0 innings, giving up just three hits while
striking out one.
With the wins, the Hornets move
to 29-16 on the year and 11-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bears fall to 15-25 and 8-6.
DSU closes out the regular season
Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against MSU.
