HORNET BATS SPARK DOUBLEHEADER WINS OVER MORGAN STATE

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Delaware State University softball bats cranked out 23 hits and 17 runs as they defeated Morgan State, 11-4 in game one and 6-1 in game two, at Lois T. Murray Field Saturday afternoon.

Junior Jordan Reid (Accokeek, Md.) led the effort for the Hornets once again as she went 6-for-9 (.667) from the plate with three runs scored, two RBI, two doubles, a triple and stolen base.

Tied at 2-2, DSU scored three runs on three hits and one error in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead for good over the Bears.

Freshman Ashley Davis (Seattle, Wash.) led off the frame reaching on an error by shortstop Tiffany Rubin and eventually scored on a single from sophomore Skye Boris (Magnolia, Del.).  Reid came up next and singled and advanced to second on the throw in while pinch runner Kelsey Lewis (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) scored.  Reid then scored on an RBI single from junior Rachel Carroll (Oxnard, Calif.).

The Hornets struck again in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, scoring three runs in each.

Reid doubled and Waters singled in the sixth before junior Casey Beighley (Los Angeles, Calif.) smacked a two-RBI single.  Beighley moved around the bases and then scored on a double from freshman Stephanie Martello (Oxnard, Calif.) before the end of the inning.

Parr led off the top of the seventh with a single before senior Allison Rubin (Glen Burnie, Md.) came in as a pinch runner.  Rubin then scored off of a double from Reid.  Junior Tawny Reeger (Simi Valley, Calif.) pinch ran for Reid and scored when Waters doubled down the left field line.  Waters advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored before the end of the frame to give DSU an 11-4 victory.

Freshman Ashlyn Campbell (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) earned her eighth win of the season as she gave up six hits, four runs (all earned), and one walk while striking out one in 4.0 innings pitched.

Beighley threw a gem in game two, going 6.0 innings strong while giving up just one run on three hits to earn her eighth win of the year.

The Hornets scored a run in the first, third and fourth innings of the second game before posting another three-run inning in the sixth.

With two base runners on, Davis hit an RBI single to make things 4-1.  Parr came up next and slugged a two-RBI double to go up, 6-1.  With two outs, Reid tripled to right field before Waters grounded out to the pitcher to end the frame.

Freshman Stephanie Sarris (Rohnert Park, Calif.) closed out both games for DSU and pitched a total of 4.0 innings, giving up just three hits while striking out one.

With the wins, the Hornets move to 29-16 on the year and 11-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.  The Bears fall to 15-25 and 8-6.
