PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The hits and runs were
plentiful Saturday afternoon at Lady Hawks Field for the Delaware State
University softball team as they defeated the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore, 13-3 and 12-1, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Six Lady Hornets posted multiple
hits on the day and were led by junior Jordan
Reid (Accokeek, Md.) and freshman Stephanie
Martello (Oxnard, Calif.).
Reid went 5-for-6 on the day with six runs scored, three RBI and a
triple while Martello went 5-for-7 with four runs, 3 RBI, a home run and
double.
Senior Andrea Waters (Anchorage, Alaska) and junior Casey Beighley (Los Angeles, Calif.) each went 3-for-7 on the
afternoon. Waters tallied four RBI
and four runs on two doubles while Beighley posted two runs, one RBI and a
double.
In the first game of the
doubleheader, DSU held an 8-3 lead after five innings before posting six runs
in the top of the sixth to run-rule the Lady Hawks, 13-3.
Freshman Ashlyn Campbell (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) earned her seventh win of
the season for the Lady Hornets as she pitched 3.1 innings and gave up just
three runs (all earned) on four hits and three strikeouts.
In the second game of the
afternoon, Reid led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and advanced to
second on an error by catcher Charlise Castro. Martello took advantage of the situation and smashed a
two-run homer over the center field fence to take an immediate 2-0 lead.
DSU built on that lead in the top
of the second inning, scoring five runs on five hits.
Junior Breanne Parr (Moorpark, Calif.) was first to reach base on a walk
and then advanced to third on a double down the left field line by junior Leslie Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del.).
Junior Chelsea Stern (Wings, Md.)
followed with another walk and all three scored on a triple down the left field
line by Reid.
The hits kept on coming as Waters
then hit an RBI double to left field, Martello hit an RBI single up the middle
and Beighley doubled to right center.
The Lady Hornets continued their
onslaught in the top of the fourth as Stern led off with a double to left
center and Reid followed with a single to left field. A wild pitch from Amber Corrigan allowed Stern to score
while Reid scored and Waters reached on an error by third baseman Carmen
Gurrola. Freshman Ashley Davis (Seattle, Wash.) tripled
to right field to score Martello and Waters and give DSU an 11-0 advantage.
Each team posted a run in the
fifth inning, but it wasn't enough for UMES as they fell victim to the run-rule
once again, this time at 12-1.
Beighley earned her sixth victory
of the year in the win as she went 3.0 innings strong, giving up no runs on
four hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
With the pair of wins, the Lady
Hornets move to 21-10 on the season and 4-1 in the conference while the Lady
Hawks fall to 6-27 overall and 2-5 in the MEAC.
The two teams conclude the series
on Sunday with a noon first pitch at Lady Hawks Field.
