WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Breanne Parr (Moorpark, Calif.) and senior Andrea Waters (Anchorage, Alaska) combined for three RBI in the top of the seventh inning as the Delaware State University softball team defeated Howard University, 4-3, in the series finale at Banneker Field this afternoon.
The Bison scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning off of two errors and three hits to take a 2-0 lead before the Lady Hornets responded in the top of the fourth with a run of their own off of a homer from junior Casey Beighly (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Howard went up 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a home run from junior Rebecca Kirshner.
DSU led off the seventh inning with two consecutive singles from freshmen Ashlyn Campbell (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and Ashley Davis (Seattle, Wash.). With one out, Parr singled in the two runners to tie the game at 3-3. Junior Chelsea Stern (Wings, Md.) then came in as a pinch-runner for Parr.
With two outs in the inning, Stern advanced to second on a wild pitch from junior Samantha Gatson and then moved to third on an error by senior catcher Christine Sborz. Senior Emily Johnson replaced Gatson on the mound and then gave up the eventual game-winning run off of an RBI double from Waters to score Stern.
Freshman Stephanie Sarris (Rohnert Park, Calif.) earned the win for the Lady Hornets as she gave up just one run (earned), two hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched.
Campbell started the game for DSU and pitched one-plus innings before being moved to the designated player spot. Campbell re-entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and pitched a perfect inning to earn the save.
The Lady Hornets improve to 19-10 on the season and 2-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bison move to 10-18 and 1-2 in the MEAC.
DSU travels south to Princess Anne, Md. for a MEAC weekend set against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. while Sunday's single game is slated for noon.
