DSU SPLITS WITH HOWARD IN MEAC OPENING SERIES

Washington, D.C. (Apr. 3, 2011) --- The Delaware State University softball team opened its 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule with a doubleheader split at Howard today. The Hornets won the first game 4-1 and Howard took the nightcap 6-1.

In the opener, freshman pitcher Stephanie Sarris had a solid outing and Andrea Waters collected three hits, including a homer, and three RBI to lead the Hornets.

Sarris allowed eight hits and one run, while striking out three in 6.2 innings to earn the win.

Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. Stephanie Martello knocked in the first run on a fielder's choice and Janelle Lukens singled in the second run. Lukens had two hits in three at-bats in the contest.

The Hornets led 2-1 when Waters smacked a two-run homer in the fifth. Jordan Reid, who reached base on an error to lead off the inning, scored ahead of Waters on the homer.

Ashlyn Campbell recorded the final out in relief to record a save for the Hornets.

In the nightcap, Howard's Carly Martin tossed a seven hit complete game to earn the win. Emily Johnson had three hits and a run batted in and Rebecca Kirshner collected two hits and a RBI to lead the Bison's 11-hit attack.

Delaware State trailed 6-0 before Lukens singled in Ashley Davis in the top of the sixth inning to break up the shutout. Davis reached second base on an error to lead off the inning.

The Hornets are 18-10 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC, while Howard is 9-16 and 1-1.

The teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game on Monday. Game time is 2:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
