Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 5, 2011) --- Ashlyn Campbell tossed a four-hit shutout in Delaware State's 5-0 win over Norfolk State in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon. The Spartans bounced back to take the nightcap 2-1.
Campbell scattered four singles, while striking out three without allowing a walk to post her first collegiate win. Delaware State opened the scoring when Breanne Parr hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning. The Hornets added three insurance runs in the sixth. Andrea Waters, Tawny Reeger and Rachel Carroll had run-scoring hits in the inning.
Parr was among four Delaware State players with two hits. Jordan Reid, Janelle Lukens and Casey Beighly also had two hits for the Hornets.
In game two, Norfolk State's Casey Pomeroy tossed a seven-hit complete game to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Spartans scored runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Delaware State pulled to within 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Beighly in the fifth, but Pomeroy struck out Parr with two runners on base to prevent further damage.
The Hornets also left runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings.
Lukens was 3-for-4, while Reid had two hits in four at bats.
Delaware State begins a week-long Florida swing on Tuesday (Mar. 8) at North Florida.
