Dover, Del. (Mar. 31, 2011) --- The Delaware State softball team claimed the season series with the University of Delaware after the teams split a doubleheader at UD Field on Wednesday.
The Hornets won the second game of the twin-bill 12-2 to take the season series between the teams two games to one.
Delaware took the first game of yesterday's doubleheader 7-6,
In the nightcap, the Hornets had 14 hits, including nine for extra bases. Jordan Reid was 4-for-5 with a run batted in, and Andrea Waters, Stephanie Martello, Casey Beighly and Ashley Davis had two hits each.
Waters smacked a two-run homer, while Martello and Davis each had two doubles.
The Hornets opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Delaware hurt its cause with six errors in game two.
After the Hens tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first, the Hornets scored three in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Martello had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
Delaware State scored three runs in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Beighly and Janelle Lukens had run-scoring doubles in the fourth. Beighly also singled in a run in the sixth to give DSU an 8-2 lead.
The Hornets added four runs in the seventh, highlighted by Waters' two-run homer. Reid also doubled in a run in the inning.
Freshman Stephanie Sarris (3-0) threw seven strong innings to earn the win. She allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out five.
In the opener, Delaware scored five runs in the bottom of the first and held on for the win. Martello hit her first collegiate homer, a two-run shot in the second, to cut the Hens' lead to 5-2.
Delaware led 7-3 before the Hornets scored three in the fifth. Davis hit a two-run homer in the inning to cut the Hens' lead to 7-6. It was also her first career home run.
Delaware State put the potential tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to score.
Reid had two hits in the first game to 6-for-8 in the doubleheader. Martello had five RBI in the two games.
The Hornets are now 17-9 this season, while Delaware is 10-20.
Delaware State will begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Howard. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 1.
