Dover, Del. (Mar. 20, 2011) --- Casey Beighly tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Delaware State to a 2-0 win over Mount St. Mary's in the championship of the 2011 DSU Capital City Classic at Soldier Field this afternoon. The Hornets were 4-0 in the two-day tourney to claim the title.
Beighly has thrown 16 consecutive scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six without a walk during the span. She is 5-4 with a 3.09 earned run average this season.
Delaware State used its speed to tally the game's first run. Jordan Reid led off the bottom of the first inning with a double, advanced to third on a single by Chelsea Stern and scored on a steal of home. Reid was 3-for-4 in the contest and has five hits in her last seven at bats.
The Hornets added a run in the fourth when Janelle Lukens led off the inning with a single and Stephanie Martello followed with a double to score Lukens, who was 2-for-2 in the game and has five hits in her last five at bats. She was 7-for-12 with four RBI in the tournament.
Earlier Sunday, the Hornets defeated North Carolina Central 15-3. Lukens was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, while Martello and Rachel Carroll had two hits and two RBI each.
Delaware State led 1-0 before scoring eight times in the second inning. Lukens led off the second with a home run and also had a run-scoring double in the inning. Carroll and Beighly also had two-run hits in the second.
The Hornets return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 23) with a home doubleheader against Delaware. The first game gets underway at 2:30 p.m. at the DSU softball complex.
