HORNETS WIN TWO IN CAPITAL CLASSIC

Dover, Del. (Mar. 19, 2011) --- Freshman Stephanie Martello singled in the game winning run with one out in the eighth inning to give Delaware State a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Mount Saint Mary's in the Capital City Classic at the DSU softball complex today.

Earlier in the day, the Hornets (10-8) defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore 8-0 in tournament action.

In the Mount St. Mary's contest, Delaware State trailed 3-0 before scoring a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to tie the game.

The Mount scored their first run on a double by Nicole Reeder in the top of the fourth. Reeder smacked a two-run homer in the fifth to give Mount St. Mary's a three-run lead.

Delaware State began its comeback when pinch hitter Andrea Waters singled in Tawny Reeger with two out in the fifth to cut the Mount's lead to 3-1.

The Hornets tied the game when freshman Ashley Davis singled in Allison Rubin and Leslie Pleasanton with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

After The Mount failed to score in the top of the eighth, Delaware State's Casey Beighly was placed on second base to start the bottom of the inning under tie-break rules.

Sherelle Sheppard sacrificed Beighly to third before Davis followed with a single through the right side to end the game.

Stephanie Sarris (1-0) tossed two innings of shutout relief to earn the win for the Hornets. She struck out three of the seven batters she faced. Delaware State starter Ashlyn Campbell allowed three unearned runs, while striking out six in six innings.

Nicole Pagano was tagged with the loss for Mount St. Mary's. She allowed eight hits and all four DSU runs, while striking out 11, in the complete game effort.

In the win over UMES, Rachel Carroll was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in, while Beighly tossed a one-hit shutout and drove in two runs.

Carroll singled in a run in the first inning and had a run-scoring double in the fifth. Beighly knocked in two runs with a single in the first.
