Jacksonville, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2011) --- Delaware State scored nine runs in the first inning and eight in the fourth en route to a 17-5 win over Alabama State in the opening round of the North Florida Osprey Invitational today. The game ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
The Hornets snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 6-6. Alabama State fell to 3-12.
Stephanie Martello drove in three runs and Breanne Parr knocked in two to lead the Delaware State attack. Parr and Tawny Reeger had two hits each for DSU.
The Hornets sent 12 batters to the plate in their nine-run first inning. Five players drove in runs, while the Hornets also benefitted from five Alabama State errors. Reeger capped off the rally with a run-scoring double.
Delaware State led 9-5 before tallying eight runs in the fourth. The inning was highlighted by Martello's three-run double and a two-run double by Parr.
Freshman Ashlyn Campbell (2-1) pitched four innings to earn the win. Campbell allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out four.
