Cary, N.C. (Feb. 26, 2011) - The Delaware State softball team posted a 9-1 win over Siena before falling to Youngstown State 3-2 at the North Carolina Central Lady Eagle Classic this afternoon.
The Hornets have won two of their three games this season.
In the Siena contest, senior Andrea Waters was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and freshman Stephanie Martello had two hits and two RBI to pace the Hornets' 12-hit attack.
Delaware State opened the scoring when Martello singled in two runs in the top of the first inning. The Hornets scored four runs in the third to open up a 6-0 lead. Waters doubled in two runs, while Jordan Reid and Janelle Lukens also had run-scoring hits in the third. Reid and Lukens also had two hits in the contest.
Waters smacked her second two-run double of the game to give the Hornets an 8-0 lead in the fifth.
The game was halted after Siena batted in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule.
Starter Casey Beighly allowed four hits and one run in 4.1 innings to earn the win. Beighly struck out two and walked one in her first start of the season.
In the Youngstown State contest, Delaware State allowed three runs in the top of the first inning. The Hornets answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Reid singled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a single by Tawny Reeger, and scored on a double steal with Reeger to cut the Penguins lead to 3-1.
The score held up until the last of the seventh inning. Waters led off the seventh with a single and advanced to third when Martello followed with a double. The Hornets pulled to within 3-2 when Waters scored on a ground out by Ashley Davis with one away, but Reid lined out to end the game with the tying run at third base.
Delaware State freshman Ashlyn Campbell pitched 6.2 innings of scoreless relief to prevent further damage by the Penguins. Campbell allowed just three hits, while striking out six without a walk.
The Hornets will wrap up the Lady Eagle Classic with games against South Carolina State and North Carolina Central on Sunday.
